Mwenzo Welfare Society
Formation
The Mwenzo Welfare Society was first formed around 1912 at Mwenzo Mission in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).
It was later reorganized and became more active in 1923.

Aims
To improve the welfare of Africans.
To represent African grievances to the colonial government.
To promote education among Africans.
To encourage unity and cooperation among Africans.
To discuss social, economic, and political problems affecting Africans.

Decline
The society had limited resources and membership.
Colonial authorities placed restrictions on African political activities.
New welfare associations emerged in other parts of the country.
More politically active organizations later replaced welfare societies.
By the 1930s, its influence had greatly declined as Africans joined broader nationalist movements.
Significance
It was the first African welfare society in Zambia.
It helped create political awareness among Africans.
It laid the foundation for later nationalist movements that led to Zambia's independence.
